Greensburg takes D3 opener vs. Pitt City

imageAfter a successful 2015 – 2016 campaign and making the playoffs in Division 4, Greensburg embraced the move up to Division 3 in the ARU. On a very hot Saturday, September 10, Greensburg traveled to Turner Valley Soccer Complex to play the host Pittsburgh Rugby Club D3 side.

The game began with GRFC imposing its will with the pack and 8 man Ross Welshons dotting down a try on an 8 man pick from 15 meters out. Hudnell Caldwell hit the conversion to make it 7-0. Scrumhalf Jeremy Basinger dotted down a try at the 30 minute mark with a failed conversion and closed the half with a 12-0 lead.

The second half started out much the same as the first but some sloppy play by Greensburg resulted in Pitt City scoring a try at the 50 minute mark to make the score 12-5. Greensburg immediately answered with another 8 man pick from 40 meters out as Welshons sprinted down the sidelines for an uncontested try, his second of the day. Caldwell converted to put the score at 19-5. Pitt City was again able to capitalize on GRFC mistakes to make the score 19-10 but Basinger found a hole in the defense to put his second try down at 65′. Caldwell missed the conversion to put the game at 24-10. #12 Orifice dotted the last try of the day for GRFC on a set piece out of a line out with, Caldwell missed the conversion. Pitt City did have one last drive at the end of time to put the final score at 29-15. Photos courtesy of Jennifer Duceour.
